What this site collects

This site is run for the U.S. Department of State to recruit Foreign Service candidates. When you fill in one of our forms we collect what you enter: your name, email address and phone number, and, depending on the form, your postal code and state, the careers you're interested in, your organization, notes you write to us, your answers to our FSOT questions, and a resume if you choose to upload one.

We use it to send you the career information you asked for, to contact you about recruitment events and the hiring process, and to measure our outreach. Giving us this information is voluntary. Each form carries a Privacy Act Statement with the authority, purpose and routine uses.

System of records

The information you submit is kept in a Privacy Act system of records covered by the system of records notice STATE-31, Human Resources Records, and is described in the Privacy Impact Assessment for the Foreign Service recruitment system.

Analytics

We count page visits with a privacy-focused analytics service that sets no cookies and doesn't track you across sites. It receives the page address (without any personal details from the link, though we keep campaign tags such as utm_source), the referring site, and your browser's screen size, browser and operating system. Your IP address is used only to estimate your country and is not stored.

Cookies

We don't use advertising or tracking cookies. The site sets a tz cookie with your time zone so dates show in your local time, and, after you join the Talent Network, a cookie that lasts ten minutes so the confirmation screen can show your name. Videos are embedded in YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode, which doesn't set cookies until you play them.

Error reports

If a page fails, a technical error report goes to our error-monitoring service. Reports contain the page address without its query string and technical details of the error, not your form answers.

How long we keep it

We keep your information for as long as it's needed for recruitment and as the records schedule for this system allows, then delete it. Resumes uploaded to the Talent Network are kept under the same rule.

Your choices

Every email we send has an unsubscribe link. To see, correct or remove the information we hold about you, email NixonJH@state.gov.

Security

The site is served only over encrypted connections, and the information you submit is stored encrypted in U.S. government cloud systems with access limited to the staff who run the recruitment program.
